DESIGN-BUILD - REPLACEMENT OF TWO BRIDGES ON BRONX RIVER PARKWAY BETWEEN EAST TREMONT AVE AND BRONX PARK BRONX COUNTY, NY
The NYSDOT hired Yonkers Contracting / AECOM Design Build Team to replace the existing 1500’ Span of Viaduct and E. Tremont Bridge on the Bronx River Parkway. The existing bridge is nearing the end of its service life and will be replaced with new a span to enhance safety and resiliency to the roadway and community. Key Features of the new construction are full replacement of two aging bridges with new modern design low maintenance structures; new exit ramp and bridge to 177th St. to create smoother traffic flow; New shared-use path with connections to the Bronx River Greenway for pedestrians and bicyclists; new storm water drainage system updates; new LED lighting to improve safety and driving conditions at night.
The construction work is staged to minimize the impact to traffic and the community with both conventional stick build with cranes and hydraulically launched sections of bridge span. There will be two spans in different stages launched roughly 980 linear feet over the 180th St MTA train yard. Foundation work includes a combination of drilled micropiles and footings directly on bedrock. Four new bridge abutments, two at E. Tremont Ave, one at 180th St and one at the Ranaqua Parks Facility all of which are split by stage of the project. Yonkers Contracting will utilize two 40 ton Specialized Lifting Equipment Cranes to dismantle and assemble the new viaduct bridge spans which will lesson impact on community and MTA operations.
