PROJECT Pelham Line Five Stations (MTA-NYCT)

RAIL AND TRANSIT

PELHAM LINE FIVE STATIONS (MTA-NYCT)

Yonkers’ renewal of five elevated stations in the Bronx along the IRT Pelham Line – Buhre Avenue, Middletown Road, Zerega Avenue, Castle Hill Avenue, and the Pelham Bay Park terminal station – has improved passenger facilities for commuters traveling the No. 6 train. The line carries two sets of express rail tracks and local tracks that stop at each station and runs above congested Westchester Avenue. Yonkers completed the construction work two stations at a time with trains running on the express tracks during weekends, while maintaining vehicular traffic and pedestrians below.

New platform canopy roofs, station mezzanines, stairways from the street to station overhead, lighting and artwork throughout the stations with new ADA boarding areas were installed for accessibility and tactile warning strips were replaced for passenger safety. On four of the stations Yonkers’ work also included significant structural steel repairs and replacement of the running rail and through-span structures within the station limits. Yonkers expedited the work while minimizing passenger impacts by working at two stations concurrently during seven-month shutdowns.  The Pelham Bay Park station remained open throughout the construction which included repair of the bridge over the tracks.
