Yonkers Contracting Company Receives 2025 Arthur Gruhn Excellence in Construction Award

10/30/25 - Yonkers Contracting Company is proud to receive the 2025 Arthur W. Gruhn Excellence in Construction Award in the Large Project category for our work on the I-95 Bridge Safety Improvements and Reconstruction between Exits 16 and 17 in Norwalk and Westport, Connecticut.

A standout achievement was the replacement of the Saugatuck Avenue bridge using Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) methods. Each directional bridge was replaced during a two-week full closure using the lateral slide method—similar to sliding a drawer closed. On two separate weekends, the existing bridges were demolished, and the new structures were slid horizontally on temporary supports to the same location of the existing structure. Once positioned, the approach roadways were paved to match the new bridge elevation and reopened to traffic. Yonkers earned early completion bonuses for both slides.

Additional work included drainage and lighting system upgrades, guide rail improvements, and enhancements to commuter facilities. The project involved substantial quantities of material, including 127,000 tons of asphalt paving and 20,000 linear feet of precast concrete barrier.

The successful delivery of this large-scale infrastructure project reflects the dedication, coordination, and technical expertise of our entire team. We’re proud to have contributed to safer, more efficient travel for Connecticut commuters.
